Electrical Glossary
Commonly Used Acronyms and Definitions.
DMM-DVOM=Digital Multimeter
OL/OFL=Out of limits that a DMM can measure when set to a specific range.
Infinity=To continue without end or no ending point.
Constant=A value that always remains the same.
Impedence=A working resistance;a material's opposition to flow of electrical current.Measured in Ohms.
Resistance=Like Impedence,it is a electrical restriction measured in Ohms.Opposition to Current (Amperage)flow.
Opposition=The action of working against something(opposing)
Electrical Load=Anything that will cause a voltage drop in an electrical circuit due to it's internal resistance.
Voltage Drop=Voltage that is consumed by a load as current flow through it.
Continuity=An uninterrupted path;a complete path for current to flow in a circuit.
Induce=To produce, create or bring about something.Creating voltage in a conductor while moving through a magnetic field.
Reciprocal=One number related to another number that when multiplied together their product is 1.
To get the reciprocal of a number, just divide that number by 1.
The reciprocal of 2 is .5 2x.5=1
Voltage=Electrical pressure needed to force current through a circuit.
Electrical Force measured in Volts.
Amperes=The movement of electrons across a conductor.
Electrical current(electron)flow measured in Amps.
Ohms=The measurement of an electrical restriction/resistance.
Direct Current=Voltage amount that stays above 0 volts causing current to flow in only one direction.
Alternating Current=Voltage amount that goes above and below 0 volts causing current to flow back and forth in two directions.
Analog=Voltage levels that continually vary or range.
Digital=Voltage levels that are at maximum level or 0.no middle range.
R.F.I/E.M.I=Radio Frequency Interference;Any electromagnetic or radio wave disturbance that interrupts, obstructs, degrades or limits the effective performance of electronics and electrical equipment.
